Sky Landscape Artist of the year 2018

I was lucky to be invited to compete against 50 other artists in the wildcard category for Sky Arts fantastic TV show Landscape Artist of the Year.  The recording took place at Viking Bay in Broadstairs, Kent… a beautiful quintessential English seaside village! If you haven’t seen the show you should look out for it as they have made a couple of series now. Also well worth watching the Portrait Artist of the Year too! Both amazing and inspiring.

Despite the UK being gripped with a heatwave this June we arrived at Broadstairs to find freezing cold, bleak Wintery conditions! The rough seas and grey skies made for excellent inspiration to paint however (after all who wants to see just a bright blue sky with no clouds in a painting?!). We were given 4 hours to paint our landscapes spread over 6 hours with breaks, filming, interviews etc.

I made sure I securely fixed my canvas and easel to my chair with rolls of masking tape to stop it blowing away. Some artists who chose more exposed locations on the pier got drenched by the high waves crashing over on them! Despite the shivering I got to work with the acrylics.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day and felt happy with the painting I was able to create in the time (and the freezing windy conditions!). I didn’t make it through to the next round but I was overwhelmed by the number of members of the public who told me my painting was their favourite. (perhaps they told everyone that eh?!). I’m really looking forward to watching the show when it airs in the Autumn on Sky Arts.

Spring Art Show

Spring Art Exhibition 2018

Spring Art Exhibition 2018

I recently held a huge art show at a friend’s home in Surrey. The show was a fantastic success with plenty of paintings selling on the night. It was great to see lots of clients who already collect my work… and I now have a lot of new clients too who bought at the show.

My friend kindly offered her home to display my art and what a home it is! Guests collected drinks from the ‘Bond room’ which featured a number of my James Bond portraits. Guests could then wonder through to the ‘lounge’, a very large 300 year old barn which was a spectacular space to display 50 paintings. I showed mostly iconic portraits of musicians, movie and sports stars but also included urban landscapes and superheroes too! The paintings continued in the kitchen where we had a number of wildlife paintings for sale. Here is a short fly-through video showing most of the works:-

Displaying art in a home environment is very unique and is a totally different experience to a gallery. Guests relaxed, used the sofas, chatted and we have had lovely comments about how special the show had been. That’s Surrey TV even came down and featured the show on their news channel!

I must thank a lot of people here… my dear friend Amanda who very generously let us takeover her home for the night (and the week before and after!), my family and friends for ensuring everyone had drinks and canapes, my wife Helen who was rushed off her feet all night taking the art sales and to all my clients and new clients who came along to support me. I REALLY appreciate your support and all the kind feedback you have given me about the evening.

We are already planning shows for the Autumn and Spring next year so stay tuned for more info nearer the time!
